Orlando Children’s Home Playground Design

The Orlando Children’s Home in Soweto provide refuge for children up to 18 years of age, and also has a creche on the premises where several of their children attend. This made designing playgrounds quite challenging as the equipment had to be age-appropriate across a wide range of ages. Due to the harshness of the environment, we used sturdy steel equipment that focuses mostly on kinetic movement in the larger courtyard.

At the creche, large sandpits provide opportunities for creative play with loose parts, and cozy cubes provide child-size spaces for play and retreat from a stimulating environment. Swinging, balancing and spinning is also provided for.
